Animations & Interaction

  • The Leeds Beckett University website occasionally uses animations to page elements and animated gifs to add impact to pages. If you wish to stop them from playing for accessibility purposes or for personal preference then please see the guidance below. Please note that browsers sometimes change how they operate, so please refer to your browser help files to find their latest information.

  • How do I turn off animations?
    Chrome

    Chrome users will need to use browser extensions. Animation Policy from Google will help you set your own preferences.

    Microsoft Edge

    There is currently no way to disable animations within Microsoft Edge. Users of Edge (Chromium) browser can install the Chrome extensions above and use them.

    Internet Explorer

    To stop animations on a single page you can just press the 'Esc' key. This will stop the animation on that page. If you wish to restart the animations you need to refresh the page. To permanently disable the playing of animated GIF images, open Internet Options > Advanced tab. Under the Multimedia section, uncheck the Play animations in webpage check-box, click Apply and Exit and then restart your computer.

    Firefox

    Type about:config in Firefox address bar and hit Enter to open Settings. Search for the image.animation_mode flag and change its value from Normal to None. Once you restart Firefox this will disable animations.

If you're looking for an idea of an example itinerary for a day of team building we've included below what a typical day in Malham could look like for you and your team.

Location

The Malham location provides access to a dramatic landscape and environment that presents a level of outdoor adventure challenge that is inclusive for all participants, and is approximately 1.5 hours drive from the centre of Leeds.

Arrival

On arrival in Malham, the group will take part in some initial icebreakers to get motivated and involved in the day’s activities, start to get to know each other a little better, get into their pre-determined teams and start to engage with the CGO delivery team.

Activities

During the day participants will undertake a selection of activities delivered by our highly qualified instructors. The activities will include a balance of lightly physical and cognitive challenges that are brought together in a programme that supports your team, helps build resilience, and develops cooperation and communication skills. All participants will be encouraged to take the lead, work together, and make decisions and plan to make the most of the activities.

Conclusion

The day will conclude with a brief review of the activities – looking at what the teams have gained from the experience and how this may relate back into the everyday working life. CGO coaches will effectively support team reviews, encouraging all participants to share their reflections on their activity experience to help them to reflect on their decision making, how they have influenced the process and the level to which they were able to show agility. Participants will be supported and encouraged to reflect on their experiences as individuals and as a team.

Typical activities for corporate days

Below is a selection of our activities that can be incorporated into a team building day, either as part of a team walk, or static in one place.

Individuals are put in charge of managing the group, setting the pace, ensuring moral is kept high and keeping them on track and motivated. This can be a considerable task in itself especially if the group is tired or faced with inclement weather. Decision making can be highlighted.

This can form a fun and challenging aspect to the day. Whilst there are obvious parts of the day that will require good communication i.e. managing the group safely, ensuring clear details are passed in sometimes environmentally challenging conditions (wind, rain etc), there are also other scenarios we can introduce by having a remote Base Station manned by another person:

  • Limited communication – If the information passed is limited and intermittent this can lead to having to overcome anxiety within the group, tougher decision making and problem solving.
  • Remote leading – The Base Station person could be asked to remotely lead legs of the journey from the information they have at their fingertips whilst the group have their maps taken away. This requires excellent teamwork, good understanding and patience to overcome complexities.
  • Passage of detailed information - By having a base to communicate information the clarity of the details becomes essential. Blind Draw is a challenge where a description of a drawing without using any key words is completed and the results can be sent to the group for confirmation (and often amusement!).

Background challenges can keep the whole group engaged throughout the journey, giving them ongoing responsibility to gather key information. Examples include:

  • Samples – The team are challenged to find items to cover the first letter of the alphabet, i.e. Apple, Twig, Grass and fit them all into a small container. Team Work, creativity and awareness of their surroundings make this a good fun and engaging challenge.
  • Photo Trail – Before setting out the group are asked to focus on a screen and without making notes observe a selection of varied images. Once out walking the group are then asked to identify the objects/views as they see them during the journey. Concentration, clear thinking and a logical approach are required.
  • Appreciating your surroundings – Prior to the journey the group are asked to research an individual bird, animal, plant etc and during the day at relevant intervals members are selected to present back their findings. This will encourage research into a new subject, demonstrate presentational skills and give everyone appreciation of the environment they are in.
Delivery by navigation specialists of various fun challenges can be thought provoking and set everyone thinking offering a platform for discussion and decision-making. Removal of maps to navigate on memory, pre-hiding maps for discovery, identifying landmarks through elimination and improvisation using sketch maps are some of the possibilities.
Ever completed a walk when you can’t see where you are going? This can be a challenge even on a pavement so if the group are to overcome a section of pathway in a wooded area blindfolded then the group will need to organised, give each other confidence and communicate exceptionally well. 
Throughout the journey the group can be given something that they are responsible for taking care of. This could be delicate so requires careful carriage or something that requires improvisation and ingenuity like water.
Sections of the walk can be chosen to allow for pairs or groups of people to discuss key chosen topics that might be aligned to personal goals or organisational strategies for example. These periods can be very effective allowing free flow conversation without bleeping phones or distractions that destroy concentration. These walking sections can also be used for individuals to gain some total headspace and reflect on tasks just completed or issues they are more widely facing.
