Freelance outdoor activity instructor

Carnegie Great Outdoors encourages applications from Freelance Outdoor Instructors interested in working on our expanding portfolio of activity programmes.

To work for us you need:

  • A skill in at least one outdoor activity
  • Coaching or instructor qualifications approved by the relevant national governing body (NGB) for each of your sports or activities
  • A full UK driving licence (preferably with D1)
  • An outdoor first aid certificate
  • Professional indemnity insurance
  • DBS clearance

You'll need to be able to:

  • Lead and manage groups of people
  • Give clear instructions and explanations
  • Inspire confidence and give encouragement
  • Remain calm in difficult or challenging situations
  • Deal with challenging behaviour

You should also have experience of working with a variety of client groups in the outdoors and a sound understanding of the outdoor sector including relevant legislation.

Evidence of a high standard of customer care and excellent interpersonal, communication and customer liaison is essential. To be successful in joining us you should be comfortable working without supervision and also as a member of a team, providing support and assistance to colleagues when required. 

You'll usually work long, irregular hours including evenings and weekends. There are more work opportunities available in the summer months and less in winter. The work is physically demanding and involves being outside in all weather conditions, often in remote locations. You'll work in open countryside, rugged terrain, hills, mountains, gorges, rivers and lakes. Our activity programmes will often involve staying away from home in hostels or camping.

You'll provide:

  • Outdoor adventure activities for school, college and university students
  • Outdoor adventure activities for youth groups and National Citizenship Scheme (NCS)
  • Team building and leadership development exercises in the outdoors for corporate clients
  • Outdoor adventure charity fundraising events

Your day-to-day duties will include:

  • Preparing for activities
  • Driving clients to activities in a minibus (D1 qualified staff only)
  • Explaining, advising on and demonstrating activities
  • Instructing in your qualified activities (climbing, walking, canoeing, mountain biking, caving etc)
  • Making sure equipment and facilities are safe
  • Explaining safety procedures
  • Checking weather conditions, assessing hazards and managing risks
  • Supporting clients who may be nervous about taking part in activities
