Mentor Training

Logistical training

New and returning mentors access materials aimed at ensuring they are familiar with our quality assurance and assessment processes. These materials are delivered asynchronously. Once a mentor is allocated to a student and we are in contact, we send a link to an ‘Essential Mentor Training’ video (module 1) which walks mentors through the key tasks we ask of them and give an outline of the expectations we share with our students about their time in placement.

Further materials (modules 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8) cover aspects of the mentor role in more depth. Some of these are delivered synchronously, and some asynchronously.

Developing mentors

Our mentor training programme also includes a strand aimed at developing our provision through interactive co-learning from mentor experience together with discussions around the research base. This strand includes collaborative face-to-face meetings (modules 5, 7, 8 and 9) which focus on developing the security of joint assessment judgements, building strong relationships with students, enhancing observation practice and subject knowledge development.

Link tutor visits are another means through which mentors develop their practice. Our link tutors are all experienced practitioners who work with mentors to help provide contextualised support aimed at improving practice.

Self-Audit

Finally, we are developing our use of mentor self-audit both as a feedback tool to inform the planning and delivery of our mentor training activities and to encourage mentors to focus their self-development and that of their colleagues.
