Registrar and Secretary

Michaela qualified as a solicitor in 2005 and practiced as a corporate/commercial solicitor in both regional and international firms in Leeds, before joining the University of Huddersfield in 2009 as an in-house solicitor. She was appointed as University Secretary at Huddersfield in 2014. She moved to Sheffield Hallam in September 2019 to take on the role of University Secretary and Clerk to the Board.

In April 2024, Michaela joined Leeds Beckett as Registrar and Secretary; her key responsibilities are to ensure:

  • that the university operates within the parameters of its governance, legal and regulatory responsibilities, including oversight of any engagement with the Office for Students
  • matters of governance are sound and effective, and that governance is seen and utilised as an enabler of strategic change
  • the delivery and development of modern, customer focussed student administration services through the Registrar & Secretary's Office
  • the provision of high quality legal advice
  • the provision of an effective student casework and compliance service, including UKVI compliance and engagement with the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA)
  • appropriate business continuity and risk management arrangements are established and effective
  • appropriate arrangements are in place to secure compliance with Information Governance legislation, including Data Protection and Freedom of Information
  • oversight of other key institutional compliance policies, including Safeguarding, Whistleblowing, Prevent, Fraud and Bribery

Michaela holds an MBA from the University of Huddersfield, is a Chartered Manager and is a graduate member of the Institute of the Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. She became an elected member of the Association of Heads of University Administration (AHUA) Executive in 2023 and is the AHUA Representative on UCEA’s Health and Safety Committee.
