Kathryn Waldegrave, Practice Learning Lead

Kathryn Waldegrave

Practice Learning Lead

Kathryn has a wide and varied career in nursing. Working as a Clinical Practice Teacher whilst in her Health Visiting role led Kathryn into teaching at University and she joined Leeds Beckett as a Senior Lecturer in 2021 from the University of Leeds.

Kathryn is a Queen's Nurse, and her areas of teaching expertise derive from her clinical experiences which include prison nursing and Health Visiting. She has been able to focus elements of these to develop her research interests which has led to exciting opportunities including work with Penal Reform International, and Unlocked Grads, a post-graduate training scheme for Prison Officers.

As part of the Nursing Senior Leadership Team, Kathryn's role as Practice Learning Lead provides strategic direction to effectively support the development of clinical placements. A role not without challenges post pandemic, but one which provides the opportunity to work closely once again with practice colleagues to offer students a quality placement experience.

Current Teaching

Within the BSc Nursing course, Kathryn is part of the module team delivering 'Promoting Health and Wellbeing' to nursing students in their 2nd year of the course.

Research Interests

Kathryn's research centres around the physical health needs of older men who are ageing in prison. For her PhD, Kathryn is combining her nursing background with her prison nursing experience to explore the role of the Prison Officer in supporting age-related declining health.

As the fastest growing sub-group of the prison population, the health needs of older people in prison is a growing research area and Kathryn would like her work to contribute to highlighting the needs of this particular group.
