Karen Lavery

Senior Lecturer

Karen is a senior lecturer in the school of nursing at Leeds Beckett University. She is a Specialist Community Public Health nurse who has a passion for nursing and nurse education, primarily teaching apprentices on the trainee nursing associate programme.

Karen completed a BSc honours degree in Genetics at the University College of Swansea before commencing her adult nurse training at the University Hospital of Wales in 1989. On qualification as a registered nurse, she worked in a variety of hospital and community settings over a period of seventeen years.

Karen then completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Secondary Education (PGCE) at Hull University in 2008. These teaching skills have since been applied initially to her school nursing role and then to the role of a lecturer in nursing firstly with Bolton University and then at Leeds Beckett University since December 2021.

In 2016, Karen achieved an MSc as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (school nursing) by completing a systematic literature review to investigate how to improve retention of registered nurses, newly employed with the school nursing team. A preceptorship framework that incorporated the research findings was devised and successfully implemented within the Bradford school nursing team.

Whilst with Bolton University, Karen delivered a variety of modules on the trainee nurse associate (TNA) programme and in 2021, she attained a Fellowship into the Higher Education Academy to ensure quality delivery of education and learner support.

Whilst at Leeds Beckett as a senior lecturer, Karen has continued to develop and deliver the trainee nurse associate course, being passionate about the learner experience and development.
