Leeds Beckett University to host an exclusive film screening of ‘The Last Male on Earth’ as part of responsible tourism spotlight
‘The Last Male on Earth’, directed by Floor van der Meulen, depicts the life and final years of Sudan, the last remaining male northern white rhino, whose species is now extinct.
The film raises important questions about the safety of animals in their natural habitats and the risks they face under the threat of extinction. It portrays how, in order to keep Sudan safe from danger, bodyguards had to protect him, while journalists and tourists rushed to Kenya to tell his story.
The School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management works with the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya through applied fieldtrips and Commonwealth Scholarships for their MSc Responsible Tourism Management students. The event will also include screening of a new short film produced by Ol Pejeta to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and endangered species.
The event is part of the School’s annual Responsible Tourism Management spotlight event on 20 and 21 May which will focus on the role of creativity, storytelling and innovation to inform a more responsible approach to tourism development.
The event will feature presentations from speakers and award-winning film producers including Willem Timmers (audio-visual storyteller and film director), Gareth Jenkins (innovation and design expert), Hannah Methven (sustainability expert for Explore Worldwide), Rob Holmes (founder, GLP Films), Dr Simon Woodward (heritage tourism professional) and Rebecca Armstrong (sustainability specialist, Travel Foundation).
Lucy McCombes, Senior Lecturer in Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Beckett University, said: ‘’The events will focus on the role of creative methods, innovation, film and responsible tourism in raising awareness about critical issues including conservation and the threat of extinction for so many species which is at the heart of the film, ‘The Last Male on Earth’.
‘’The role of responsible tourism and tourism development is critical to building back a better industry following Covid-19.’’
The annual Responsible Tourism Management event takes place between 20 May and 21 May from 09.00-16.30. The film screening will take place between 18:30 – 21:00 at The Rose Bowl, Lecture Theatre D, Portland Crescent at Leeds Beckett University’s City Campus, LS1 3HB and tickets are £5.
