How my Events Management degree helped me to get my dream job!

Libby, what course did you study and what year did you graduate?

I studied BA (Hons) Events Management. I graduated with a first-class honours degree from the UK Centre for Events Management (UKCEM) in 2021. 

Why did you choose to study at LBU?

After attending two of the University’s open days, I was sold and I knew this is where I wanted to be. Leeds has such an amazing buzz and I felt welcomed by everyone I met. The course seemed well suited to me, I loved Leeds and Headingley Campus has such great facilities, including onsite accommodation, a gym and a Students Union. 

What have you been up to since finishing your course?

Since graduating, I have stayed in Leeds and I am a Customer and Community Coordinator at Bruntwood. Bruntwood is a family-owned commercial property company that provides office and retail space throughout the North of England. My role has a strong focus on events/community and building operations. I love my role as it’s so flexible and versatile.

How did your course help you to progress in your chosen career?

During my course my tutors encouraged me to volunteer at events. This was an invaluable experience as I could apply classroom theory, whilst gaining practical experience. Having an Events Management degree showed my employer I had dedicated three years of study to an area of personal passion. 

What is your most memorable achievement to date?

A huge achievement for me was completing my degree during a global pandemic. For the final year of my degree, I had to work from home and complete a dissertation with no face-to-face support. This was extremely daunting. However, I focused on what I needed to do and received a first in my dissertation. I was over the moon and I am still extremely proud of how hard I worked. Within two weeks of graduating, I started my job at Bruntwood and I have never looked back!

What advice would you give to anyone wishing to study Events Management?

Go for it! I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leeds Beckett and I wish I could do it again. Throughout my three years, my tutors and friends gave me amazing support and made the whole experience incredible.
