How to apply
1. Which type of research degree?
At Leeds Beckett University, we offer a range of postgraduate research degrees that provide research training, enhanced employment opportunities and the chance to develop advanced skills and expertise in a specific area of interest to you.
2. Discuss your idea with an academic supervisor
To find out more about researching your subject at Leeds Beckett, you'll need to talk to an academic supervisor about your research proposal. You should do this before submitting your application.
3 When can I start studying a research degree?
There are two intakes each year for research degrees, 1 October and 1 February. Please note that some courses only have one intake per year, further details can be found on the Types of research degrees. There is a deadline for applications for each intake:
- Applications to join a research degree in October should be made by 31 May
- Applications to join a research degree in February should be made by 30 September
4. Applying
You should complete your application through our Leeds Beckett Applicant Portal. You just need to select the type of research degree you would like to study for and we'll add the subject area for you if we're able to make you an offer.
Please ensure you include the following with your submission
- Your research proposal - you are advised to read through the research proposal guidance
- A statement of purpose (maximum 1000 words) that should include
- What knowledge, skills, and training would you bring to the proposed research? This may include relevant academic study, relevant experience as a professional or practitioner, and any specific training in research skills/methods
- Why do you want to undertake this research at Leeds Beckett University?
- How does the proposed research relate to your career goals?
- Scanned copies of your degree certificates (e.g. undergraduate or masters degree certificates) and transcripts
- Scanned copies of your English language qualification
- A current CV, you should include your employment history or other professional experience, including internships
- An academic reference
5. What happens next
We'll send you an email to confirm that we've received your application. This email will also contain your unique applicant reference number.
We'll process your application as quickly as possible:
- Your application will be considered by a School Research panel. The panel will evaluate applications based on the quality of the proposal, preparedness of the applicant and feasibility of the research project
- You should expect a decision within six weeks of the closing date
- If your course has a specific closing date, we'll normally wait until this date has passed
- In some cases, we may request more information, or invite you to an interview
- If we’re able to make you an offer this could be conditional or unconditional. A conditional offer will be made if you’re still studying your degree or masters course, or need to retake an English language qualification to meet our requirements. You should ensure that any evidence of meeting the conditions of your offer is submitted at least a month before your research course induction takes place
6. Starting your studies
Once you have accepted an unconditional offer you will join the Leeds Beckett Research Community. To help you prepare for your first year of study on a Postgraduate Research degree the Graduate School hold an induction for all research students. International Students should also check the relevant guidance about joining Leeds Beckett.
