Partnerships

The Leeds Beckett Schools Teacher Education Partnership

Why work with us?

At the Carnegie School of Education, we work collaboratively with a wide range of schools within the Yorkshire and Humber region to establish good practice and grow two-way developmental relationships to benefit schools, colleges, trusts and our students.

Student placements

We have a variety of excellent students who we can place in your nursery, primary school, secondary school or college, including:

  • Undergraduate primary 3-11 with QTS students in years 1, 2 and 3 of their courses
  • Postgraduate primary 3-11 with QTS students who follow a one-year full time course
  • Postgraduate secondary 11-18 with QTS students for Art and Design, English, Geography, Maths and Physical Education who follow a one-year full time course

Our students develop their theoretical knowledge at the Carnegie School of Education on Headingley Campus, which offers a superb learning environment, modern facilities and excellent resources. Their learning is informed by the very latest research and the expertise of our supportive teaching staff.

Supporting a student in your setting means:

  • New perspectives from the student to innovate and enrich the classroom experience.
  • An additional resource allowing time for staff to observe students and reflect on their own practice and developmental needs. Students build up to teaching a 50-80% timetable during the placement, depending on the course and phase of placement. This can help free up time for focused or accelerated development of pupil groups that require it.
  • Excellent recruitment prospects for graduates or ECTs. Our students are often employed by their final placement schools as they bring great, fresh ideas and up to date research-backed pedagogy.
  • The opportunity to develop mentoring skills and share good practice that could lead to a university award.
  • Evidence of a commitment to improving standards.
  • Use of our PebblePad placement system which reduces administration for Mentors and makes all our documentation easier to access.
  • Dedicated support from a university Link Tutor and placement support team throughout the student placement and free Mentor training across the year. This will not only ensure Mentors are knowledgeable in the key skills needed to be a good Mentor, but aware of the training journey of our students and have the specialist skills needed to develop teachers.
  • Access to training, conferences, courses and other professional development opportunities.

Support and professional development

We can offer:

  • Professional development opportunities for your staff beyond mentoring, for example, delivering talks or guest lectures on campus.
  • Involvement in strategic committees and steering groups providing mutual support to help guide and quality assure our ITE courses.
  • Involvement in recruitment, selection and interviewing of our ITE students.
  • Invitations to talks, seminars and professional development events that fit with the needs of your school.
  • A wide range of research expertise and can offer bespoke support and training if your school requires development in any particular area.
  • A broad range of professional qualifications including various postgraduate and master’s courses as well as short courses and CPD.
  • Accelerated learning opportunities for pupils.
  • Promotion of your school through our newsletter.
  • Support with Ofsted inspections.

Partnership agreement

The aim of the Partnership is to take shared responsibility for progressing the learning and achievement of pupils of all abilities in schools through the complementary resources and expertise of the partnership. We expect all pupils taught by our students to make good or better progress.

Organisations accommodating students on placement are part of a Partnership which has been developed over many years and represents an established relationship with the university.
