  • Only one file submission can be submitted into Turnitin (for multiple files use Blackboard Assignments or create separate )
  • All submitted files must contain at least 20 words and 100 characters. (For image submissions use Blackboard Assignments)
  • Submission titles must be between 4 and 60 characters
  • PDFs must be text based rather than image based, this occurs when documents are scanned.
  • Turnitin can accept files of up to 800 pages
  • Files of up to 100MB are accepted. (Files over 100MB cannot be submitted) NOTE: Large files may take longer to process at the point of submission, please advise students to allow enough time and consider this as a factor for any late submissions that you receive.

Please remember when setting up your assignment that Turnitin submissions must be only one document

Students must copy and paste, to create one file and PDF is the best format but the following are also accepted:

  • PDF (recommended)
  • Word / text – .doc, .docx, .odt, .pdf, .rtf, .txt
  • PowerPoint – .ppt, .pptx, .pps, .ppsx
  • Excel – .xls, .xlsx
  • Other – .html, .hwp, Adobe PostScript, Corel, WordPerfect

Students can receive support with submission via the Library and Student IT Advice Team and is helpful to provide this information to the students in the assignment brief.

It may take up to 48 hours to return Similarity Reports to students at peak submission times and after several student resubmissions (especially more than three times).

NB: If a report has not been returned, it displays as Pending in the Submissions Inbox. If this is still pending after the deadline has passed, please get in touch with our team to investigate.

On occasions, you may need to check student engagement to decide if students have attempted to submit an assignment or ascertain if a student has submitted when no submission showing.

Turnitin Receipt: Proof of Submission

Students have the option to Download, Print and or Save a digital receipt of their submission as proof that they have successfully submitted. Please see this student guide on 'How do I get a Turnitin assignment submission receipt?' to view the process.

You can run a report or ask Digital Learning Service to investigate for you if a student has provided a receipt but no submission is visible (see contact details at the bottom of this page).

Student Engagement: Who has viewed and accessed a submissions inbox

To view if the student has accessed the Turnitin submission box, run the Student Overview for Single Course module report for that student from within the affected module via Module Management.  Find out how via the guide: Module Reports.
