Accessibility and Inclusivity

Find details of what we are doing to make your graduation more accessible and open, and how you can let us know of any requirements that you or your guests may have.

If you want to celebrate your graduation with us then we want to do what we can to make that possible. We’ve listened to feedback from previous graduates and representatives from LBSU, and in 2024 this is what we are putting in place.

01 Giving you more information ahead of time

To take the uncertainty out of the day, you can find a full walkthrough of your graduation here.

You can also watch full ceremonies from 2023 so you know exactly what happens at the arena.

02 Being flexible

We factor in your requirements and those of your guests when we allocate seating. You can tell us about these when you book your place. We are also looking at ways to provide the same ceremony experience where a large crowd setting isn’t appropriate. If you think this could be apply to you, please contact us.

We have changed the layout within the graduation auditorium to include ramped access to the ceremony stage meaning everyone has the same experience.

In the past, it was compulsory to wear a gown, hat and hood at the ceremony, but now we have introduced exemptions on medical or religious grounds.

When you book your ceremony, you can also tell us your preferred name to be read out during the ceremony, if this is different from your legal name.

03 Making graduation less expensive

As part of the university’s response to the cost of living, we have also made it less expensive to attend your graduation. As well as your complementary student place, your first two guest tickets are also free, with each additional ticket being £10.

Tickets for children under two and carers are also free.

In addition, the university is also covering the cost of hiring your gown, hat and hood which you can book as soon as you have booked your place at your ceremony.

How do I let you know about my accessibility requirements?

When you book your tickets, you will be able to let us know about any requirements that you or your guests may have. We will do what we can to accommodate you and will contact you if we need to understand more on how to meet your needs.

If you need to add or amend your accessibility requirements, you can let us know by email.
