LBU graduate Kevin Sinfield OBE embarks on 7 in 7 in 7challenge in support of Motor Neurone Disease
Kevin aims to complete seven ultra marathons in seven days across seven cities of the UK to help raise awareness and funds for MND in honour of his fellow Leeds Rhinos teammate and Leeds Beckett University honorary graduate Rob Burrow MBE.
Kevin’s challenge will aim to raise awareness and support for five charities including the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Leeds Hospitals Charity’s appeal to build the Rob Burrow Centre for MND in Leeds, as well as the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. The challenge will also support the 4ED campaign.
Kevin will be supported by an incredible team for his upcoming challenge, which includes notable members of Leeds Beckett University’s community.
Dean of the Carnegie School of Sport Peter Mackreth, Professor Ben Jones, Dr Gemma Phillips and James Moran from the Carnegie School of Sport will be part of the team, alongside Leeds Beckett University graduates Phil Daly, Head of Media for Leeds Rhinos, and Martin Wolstencroft, Co-Founder and CEO of Arc Inspirations.
Speaking on the challenge Peter Mackreth said:
“It’s great to have the team back together and for myself and others from Leeds Beckett to be part of this incredible family to raise funds and awareness for MND,
“Both Kevin and Rob have helped put MND on the map in recent years and their efforts have shown how selfless they are to support such a broad community that impacts so many people.”
Pete will be on hand to support the team, alongside Carnegie School of Sport’s sports science, medical and nutrition experts Ben, Gemma and James.
Gemma will be providing medical support, James will be looking after Kevin’s nutrition, and Ben will be focusing on Kevin’s performances.
Professor Ben Jones said “We’ll all be part of a team offering our sports science, medical and nutritional expertise to Kevin throughout the challenge,
“It will be our responsibility to make sure he can get through each day safely and we’ll be working hard on his recovery process and managing his performance levels.
“This is a unique challenge compared to other sporting environments we have been part of. Our main goal is to make sure Kevin finishes the seven days.
“Our support is definitely more reactive than we are normally used to in terms of what we’d usually plan for a team because there are so many unknown elements ahead of us, but Kevin is very well prepared and psychologically he’s an unbelievably robust individual, so we’ll do our best to support him.”
