British Athletics: Leeds Talent Hub

The Talent Hub was created for promising athletes between the ages of 16 and 21, with the objective of providing a pathway from junior talent to world-class performers.

British Athletics: Leeds Talent Hub

The Leeds Talent Hub was formally established in November 2019, forged out of a long-standing partnership between the Carnegie School of Sport (CSS) and British Athletics.

It is a partnership that sees the British Athletics Talent Hub programme delivered by England Athletics at Leeds Beckett University with stakeholder support from London Marathon and the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).

Our collaborative partnership also sees players regularly use our outstanding state-of-the-art facilities at our Headingley campus.

We are excited about building on this following the Leeds United men’s team’s promotion to the Premier League.

Impact of our partnership

  1. Student experience

The Talent Hub was created for promising athletes between the ages of 16 and 21, with the objective of providing a pathway from junior talent to world-class performers. It is a partnership that sees the British Athletics Talent Hub programme delivered by England Athletics at Leeds Beckett University with stakeholder support from London Marathon and the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).

  2. Career opportunities

The partnership provides professional development and work placement opportunities with British Athletics to students in the CSS, as well as allowing British Athletics’ high-performance coaches and athletes to take advantage of access to our world-class facilities, expertise and mentorship.
Our vision for the Talent Hub is that over time, it will become a centre where athletes and coaches can benefit from excellent support, and where we can serve the wider club community, including officials and volunteers, through coaching, education, and development.

  3. Internships and postgraduate research opportunities

Two of our postgraduate students have become formal members of the Hub after completing their work placements there, while Paul Savage, an MSc Psychology of Sport & Exercise graduate, is now working as a coach mentor with British Triathlon.

Two PhD opportunities in the CSS have also come out of this partnership, with many aspects of research activity across all areas of sport and exercise science also based on our work together.

  4. Sports performance support

Our work with the Leeds Talent Hub had led to LBU hosting the European Athletics Conference in 2021. The conference will involve global representatives of athletics coming to LBU to benefit and learn from all our partnership work within the sporting community, including the Talent Hub.

The strength of our partnership with British Athletics is based on our mutual belief in developing excellence with ethical integrity, and in facilitating healthy high-performance. We look forward to continuing to work together to promote this philosophy on an even greater scale in years to come.
