About Kate Donnan
Kate is a graduate teaching assistant and a PhD candidate within the Psychology group. She previously undertook her BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science and MSc Applied Sport Physiology at the University of Brighton.
During her BSc and MSc, Kate's research predominantly focused on the ergogenic benefits of listening to high-tempo music during exercise and the effects of partial sleep deprivation on repeated-sprint performance in highly-trained female football players.
Kate has a passion for understanding the psychophysiology of team sport when exposed to different environmental stressors. Her current doctoral research investigates the effects of exercise-induced fatigue and heat exposure on physiological and cognitive performance, during prolonged high-intensity intermittent exercise. Furthermore, the research looks to understand the mechanisms that provoke these exercise-induced changes in order to gain knowledge for the development and use of ergogenic aids when exposed to environmental extremes during competition.

In elite competition, athletes are often required to perform in equatorial regions whereby temperatures can reach up to ~34°C - this additional heat-stress has been shown to accelerate the onset of exercise-induced fatigue. The research currently being undertaken investigates the extent to which fundamental cognitive skills such as working-memory, dual-task and vigilance are effected during exercise replicating the demands of team-sport in the heat. Furthermore, determining whether alterations to central catecholamine’s and serotonin are influential in facilitating these effects.
