Dyson’s research interests are in site, performance, gender and memory, and the relationships between objects and action. She is currently a part-time practice-based research PhD student with University of Glasgow and is looking into the deconstruction of the feminine domestic through the performance of a feminist (un)homely. This work questions understanding (or memory) of the gendered space and the banality or ordinariness of the everyday through physical action.
Gillian Dyson is Senior Lecturer in Performance, with Leeds Beckett University since 2009. Gillian was Course Leader of BA Performance 2012 to 2016, and previously the Course Leader MA Creative Enterprise, and Course Leader for BA Contemporary Performance Practices top up course.
Gillian was previously a lecturer with Hull School of Art & Design, University of Lincoln and has been a visiting lecturer at a number of other higher education institutions including Nottingham Trent University, Manchester Metropolitan University and Dartington College of Art.
Previous to working with Leeds Beckett University, Gillian was Head of Learning with Arc Architecture Centre Hull.
Gillian is a solo performance artist with an international exhibition profile that includes the Konsthalle Gothenberg Sweden; the Baltic Gateshead; Latitude 53 Gallery Edmonton Canada; National Review of Live Art, Glasgow and the Asiatopia Festival Bankok Thailand.
Gillian co-curated the ReROOTed programme for Humber Street Gallery, Hull 2017 UK City of Culture. She was on the Management Group for New Work Yorkshire; and on the Board of Trustees for New Work Network London. Gillian has also mentored other artist professionals including Vanessa Grasse for the 4Dance Commission 2013.
Gillian Dyson teaches on studio practice and theory modules across the under and post graduate courses and is a HEA Senior Teaching Fellow. Gillian has lead several professional development projects for students including Latitude Festival, Light Night Leeds and student performance for Leeds City Art Gallery.
