Leeds academic to chair Westminster Briefing
Professor Hylton, an expert in Equality and Diversity in Sport, Leisure and Education in the Carnegie School of Sport, will oversee the national event tomorrow which will focus on the topics of creating a culture of inclusion in sport at all levels and the best practice of developing strategies to improve inclusion in sport.
He will host the event and welcome speakers including Heather Sinclair from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Kirsty Clarke from Stonewall, Roisin Wood from Kick it Out, and Peter Ackred from Disability Sports Coach.
Some of the key issues the event will be addressing include bringing more diversity into volunteering; sport and its impact upon perceptions of diverse people; minding the gender gap in professional and non-professional sport; race disparity in sport and how it can be tackled and promoting sport for all ages.
Professor Hylton said: “Diversity and inclusion are significant factors often discussed but inconsistently implemented in sport. More needs to be done, both nationally and locally, to ensure that sport is a facilitator of inclusion and diversity within the community, and that everyone has the same access to facilities, training and the enjoyment of sport.
“Events like this can help by bringing together senior staff from sport organisations to share best practice and look at ways to improve current circumstances.”
