Student-designed garden to feature at Chelsea Flower Show
Johanna Elvidge, who studies MA Landscape Architecture, is putting the finishes touches to her trade stand garden design for landscaping giant Marshalls, where she is a CAD manager, ahead of the show’s opening day on Tuesday 21 May.
The ‘A Great British Brand’ themed garden showcases the diversity of Marshalls products, with items and inspiration taken from across the group, and has given Johanna the opportunity to utilise the skills she has learned on her course.
Johanna said: “I’ve designed gardens for Marshalls in the past, but nothing on the scale of this. I knew it would be a big project, it’s Chelsea, and to be involved is a great and unexpected privilege.”
Johanna has enjoyed a busy 2019, in which she has juggled her part-time course at Leeds Beckett with full-time work, along with being a mother.
“It’s about finding the right balance really,” she explained. “It does mean some late nights, but it’s something I’m happy to do to progress myself.
“What I’m learning at Leeds Beckett ties in a lot with what I do for my day job, and I’ve been able to use the skills I’ve picked up in my designs.”
Following the Chelsea Flower Show, Johanna’s work will be showcased again at the BBC Gardeners’ World Live show between 13-16 June.
“It’s a smaller garden, about a third of the size of what we’re doing for Chelsea, but it’s still a fantastic opportunity and a good experience.
“It’s been really enjoyable to work on these projects.”
