About Costas Tsakirides

Costas is a Senior Lecturer and teaches across the Sports Science courses. He obtained his first degree (BEd Physical Education and Sports Science) from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1989. He then came to the UK for post-graduate studies on coaching science (with tennis being his particular sport of interest).

Costas successfully completed the Advanced Diploma in Coaching Studies at Leeds Polytechnic in 1991 and was offered a place on the MSc Sports Science course at Loughborough University which he completed in 1992.

Following these academic qualifications Costas acquired a number of professional qualification in health-related exercise and fitness including the BACR (British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation) Phase Instructor Certificate in 2002.

Current Teaching

Costas is currently the module leader of Functional Anatomy (Level 4) and Physiological Basis of Cardiovascular Disease, Clinical Exercise Testing and Prescription (Level 7) and Rehabilitation (Level 6).

He is a personal tutor for Introduction to Research and Study Skills (Level 4) and he is a seminar leader for Foundations of Physiology for Sport and Exercise (Level 4)

Research Interests

Costas (along with colleagues Dr Lee Ingle and Dr Sean Carroll) publishes papers examining the efficacy of exercise training used as part of a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation programme.

Costas has an electronic database of test results that span 14 years, obtained from physiological testing of cardiac patients participating in the Heartwatch Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation programme, Leeds City Council. These results are queried and analysed to quantify the improvements conferred on cardiac patients when they regularly participate in exercise training sessions.

Another line of research investigations, Costas is involved with is the efficacy of periodic acceleration ('shaky bed') on the recovery from Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) caused by eccentric exercise. A number of undergraduate and postgraduate students are recruited to support this particular research project.
