Forgotten Heroine? Recovering Emily Hobhouse 1899-1926

To coincide with International Women's Day, Dr Helen Dampier explored the issues associated with recovering 'forgotten' women as 'heroines', focusing on the Emily Hobhouse Letters Project.

The project recovers the letters and networks of Hobhouse (1860-1926), who was a humanitarian reformer and campaigner. She is celebrated in South Africa as a heroine of the South African (Boer) War (1899-1902) but largely unknown in Britain.

The talk was filmed by Dimitrios Konstantinou-Hautecoeur, a student from the Northern Film School.

This event was part of Leeds Cultural Conversations, a series of lunchtime talks organised by the Centre for Culture & the Arts. For more information on the series please visit the website.
