School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management

English Tourism Week

As part of the Delivering Successful Hospitality Operations module, and to celebrate English Tourism Week students in the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management designed and delivered a Yorkshire themed dessert using local produce.

The judges with the winners

The desserts were judged by an industry and academic panel including John Dammone from Salvos, Paul Clarke, Head Chef at The Queens Hotel, Michael Walton, Senior Chef at Leeds Beckett University, Prof Rhodri Thomas, Dean of The School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management and Dr Peter Robinson, Head of the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Management.

The winning dessert will be served at our University’s International Student Dinner in April and a networking event during National Tourism Week. As part of the tourism event an alumni Emily Stevenson and founder of ‘Tales of a City Tours will enable participants to embark on a VIP tour. The hosts of the tours are refugees who came to Leeds and are now engaged within the Leeds community and are the creators of cultural walking tours through the help and guidance of Emily.

“The Yorkshire Dessert competition was amazing.  The students should all feel very proud of themselves for creating and showcasing their desserts before the Judging Panel.” From Peter Cox Module Leader for Delivering Successful Hospitality Operations.

'It was such a fun day! I really enjoyed working with Selina and getting to see everyone else's creations. Presenting our Yorkshire inspired Rhubarb and Ginger Eton Mess to the judges was quite scary as they all had great experience in the trade. They all seemed to enjoy our dessert!'

'We weren't expecting to win at all. All the other teams created such amazing desserts which we got to try, everyone put so much effort in. We're excited to recreate the dessert for the event we're running for the International students. We also hope to serve it at the Queens Hotel for a 400 person event in the future!'
