Who is the food champion of Euro 2016?
Vote now for the food champion of Euro 2016
To help you cast your vote we delve deeper in to the delights served up by each of the countries picked by you as potential food champions of Europe, our contenders are:
Portugal
The Portuguese food combines local ingredients cooked to shine in the sunny climate. If fish is your thing then get your vote in, bacalhau (dried, salted cod), grilled sardines, sea bass and mackerel are all on offer cooked with fresh vegetables and potatoes in a variety of dishes and stews.
Italy
Italian food favourites are as famous around the world as their footballing counterparts. Food is a key part of Italian culture and we’re not surprised, traditional pizza and pasta dishes from Italy have been adopted by the UK as food staples often washed down with a fine Italian wine.
Belgium
Belgian food, much like they’re football team, is not amongst the giant superstars of our list of potential culinary champions. Chocolate, waffles and the classic moules et frites are the most famous exports along with an amazing range of Belgian beers. Will these potential underdogs sneak an unexpected victory?
Spain
Arguably the most skilful on the football pitch, but are Spain as skilful in the kitchen? The growing tapas trend in the UK may point to our potential victors. From croquetas and chorizo to tortilla and patatas bravas there’s no doubt the Spanish are European giants when it comes to food (and football).
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland’s inclusion in Euro 2016 was definitely a surprise, is their inclusion in our food list as much of a shock though? Firm favourites on the menu are the Ulster Fry and Irish stew but Northern Ireland is also famous for an amazing range of seafood that is up there with the best, oysters, smoked salmon and juicy langoustines are all plentiful and cooked to perfection across the country.
England
It’s now 50 years of hurt for English football fans but at least they have some comfort in their food. Boasting fish and chips, bangers and mash, the Yorkshire pudding, beef wellington and the traditional fry ups England is certainly a competitive culinary force. When it comes to dessert, the English demonstrate their prowess for the pudding including the sticky toffee pudding, bread and butter pudding, Eton mess and the trifle.
France
French cuisine has long been heralded as the finest in the world and football fans from across Europe will be able to taste for themselves as they host Euro 2016. The list of famous French food is endless, we need to thank them for the croissant, the crepe, camembert and brie, boeuf bourguignon, quiche lorraine, moules mariniere and the controversial escargots.
