Swimming are a tight knit team who offer competitive opportunities across swimming and polo disciplines.

Our Ethos

Get involved

Swimmers compete in a number of BUCS competitions throughout the year, including both short and long course championships. For athletes looking to progress through the elite pathway, the club also have a close connection to the Swim England Performance Centre programme. Our men’s and women’s Water Polo team compete weekly in the British Universities and Colleges Sport Leagues alongside Upolo competitions.

Did you know?

  • Leeds Beckett University is part of the Leeds Swim England Performance Centre – one of only five University partners in the country.
  • The Swim team hold a Gold Club Mark.
  • The Water Polo team hold a Bronze Club.

What equipment will I need?

Members will need to provide their own personal swimming kit, and where they have them goggles and a cap. Although upon joining the team, members will have the opportunity to purchase University branded kit.

All other equipment is provided, including kickboards, pull-buoys, paddles, fins and water polo balls.

Prerequisites

It is expected that all members are able to swim to take part in either the swim or water polo sessions.

For Water Polo, no experience is necessary, just the enthusiasm to learn a new sport.

What is the training schedule?
  • Monday (Swim): 8pm-10pm – Pool (HC)
  • Tuesday (WP): 9pm-10pm – Pool (HC)
  • Wednesday (WP): 3pm-5pm – Pool (HC)*
  • Thursday (Swim): 7pm-8.30pm – Pool (HC)
  • Thursday (WP): 8.30pm-10pm – Pool (HC)
  • Friday (Swim): 8pm-10pm – Pool (HC)
  • Sunday (WP): 4pm-6pm – Pool (HC)

*when no home BUCS fixtures are taking place.

Bronze club mark

The swimming club was awarded the Bronze LBU Club Mark for 2023/24

We have been supporting students to reach their potential through the scheme since 2002. Famous alumni that have benefitted from the scheme include Lucy Bronze, Alistair Brownlee, Alex Yee, Emily Scarratt, Vicky Fleetwood, Laura Weightman and Tom Bosworth.

Leeds Beckett awards a number of sports scholarships to high performing athletes each year who are committed to upholding the values of the university and willing to represent Leeds Beckett in BUCS events. Scholarships are also awarded to those who demonstrate the ability to progress and achieve high levels of success in their chosen sports.

Our 'Clean Sport' commitment

All sporting participants have the right to compete in drug-free sport (Clean Sport). Leeds Beckett University adopts the UK Anti-Doping and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) position that cheating, including doping, is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport, undermining the otherwise positive impact it can have on society.

Leeds Beckett University has a free Injury Clinic at our Headingley Campus - giving students the experience they need for massage and injury treatment under supervision from qualified staff (only available during term times.)
