Applications for 2017/18

Applications for Sports Scholarships for 2017/18 are now closed. Please check back on our website on 1 March 2018 to apply for a Sports Scholarship for 2018/19.

Sports Scholarships

We have been supporting our students to reach their potential through the Carnegie Sports Scholarships Scheme since 2002. Recent alumni include James Denny (Diving) 2010 Commonwealth Games Silver medallist in the 10m Platform Syncro with Tom Daly; Laura Weightman (Athletics) 2014 Commonwealth Silver medallist and European Bronze medallist and 2012 Olympic 1500m finalist; Ali Jawad (Paralympic Weightlifting) Bench Press World Record holder.

This year we are supporting 76 Carnegie Sports Scholars from 24 sports. 

Scholarship holders receive technical, pastoral and financial support to help develop their sporting performance alongside their studies. If you want to be a Leeds Beckett Sports Scholar in 2017/18, see if you meet the selection criteria for your sport and submit an online application form.

Carnegie Focus Sports Scholarship

Carnegie Focus Sports Scholarships are offered for the following sports:
  • Women’s Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Squash, Tennis, Triathlon.
  • Financial support towards fees or as an honorarium.
  • Sports Membership for 2017/18 academic year.
  • AU Sport Club Membership for 2017/18 academic year, for your sport.
  • At least two Strength & Conditioning sessions per week.    
  • Sports Scholarship clothing.

Carnegie Sports Scholarships

  • Sports Membership for 2017/18 academic year.
  • AU Sport Club Membership for 2017/18 academic year, for your sport.
  • At least two Strength & Conditioning sessions per week.
  • Sports Scholarships clothing.

Focus Sport Scholarships

This type of scholarship is available for students who compete in the following sports: Women’s Football, Hockey, Netball, Men’s Rugby League, Men’s Rugby Union, Squash, Tennis and Triathlon.  

Performance level guidelines for consideration for Focus Sport scholarship support are detailed below on a sport by sport basis. Achieving the guideline standards below does not guarantee Focus Sport scholarship support.

In team sports the coaching staff may need to recruit a player in a specific position who can be offered Focus Sport scholarship support even though they have not met the criteria guidelines for their sport. 

FOOTBALL (W) 

  • WSL 1 Squad. 
  • WSL 1 Development Squad.
  • WSL 2 1st team player.
  • WSL 2 Development Squad via GCofE or RTC.
  • U/17 or above International Age Group “Caps”.
  • NCAA D1 & 2. 

HOCKEY (M) 

  • English Premier Division.  
  • GB International.
  • Home Nation International.
  • U/18 or above International Honours. 



HOCKEY (W)

  • Play in Investec Premier Division.
  • GB International.
  • Home Nation International.
  • U/18 or above International Honours. 



 NETBALL

  • England Senior International.
  • Home Nation Senior International.
  • Super League starter.
  • Overseas International (From Australia/ New Zealand/Jamaica/South Africa).

RUGBY LEAGUE (M) 

  • Championship 1 or 2 player. 
  • England / GB Age Group International. 

 


RUGBY UNION (M) 

  • Home Nation U20 International Championship Player.
  • Yorkshire Carnegie Academy.
  • England Students International. 


SQUASH (M)

  • Top 450 in the world rankings.
  • Junior Worlds individuals last 16 or better.
  • British Junior Open U19 Quarter Finals or better.
  • Junior European Championships quarter finalist.
  • Part of the England Squash EDP programme.
  • Represented your Country and finish in quarter finals of Team events or better.

SQUASH (W)

  • Top 150 in the world ranking.
  • Junior Worlds individuals last 16 or better.
  • Junior European Championships quarter finalists.
  • British Junior Open U19 Quarter Finals or better.
  • Junior European Championships quarter finalists.
  • Part of the England Squash EDP programme.
  • Represented your Country and finish in quarter finals of Team events or better.

TENNIS (M & W) 

 

  • Has or has had ATP / WTA world ranking points or reached the last round of qualifying draw or competed at several of these events. 
  • Made a Minimum of 3 main draw appearances in British Tour Events reaching the quarter finals or better.
  • Have a Junior ITF ranking of 500 or less. 

TRIATHLON (M & W) 

  • Standard: Proven record of winning individual BUCS medals in either Duathlon, Sprint Triathlon and/or Olympic distance triathlon in the previous 2 years.
  • Alternatively having placed in top 10 at World U-23 championships or Top 5 at European U-23 championships.

Sport Scholarships

This type of scholarship is available for students competing in the following sports recognised by British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS):

American Football, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Canoeing, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Climbing, Cricket, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Futsal, Golf, Gymnastics (Artistic), Hockey, Ju Jitsu, Judo, Karate, Korfball, Lacrosse, Modern Biathlon / Pentathlon, Netball, Orienteering, Pool, Rifle,  Rowing, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Sailing, Snooker, Snowsports, Squash, Surfing, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Trampolining, Triathlon, Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, Wakeboarding, Water Polo, Weightlifting & Windsurfing.

The panel welcomes applications from athletes who compete at Olympic Games level in a sport not mentioned above. 

Performance level guidelines for consideration for Sport scholarship support are detailed below on a sport by sport basis. For the sports listed above but not mentioned below students must be competing at age group or senior International level, or be supported by TASS in the year of their application. Achieving the guideline standards below does not guarantee sport scholarship support.

ATHLETICS (M & W)

  • Achieve the IAAF qualifying standard for World Junior Championship (2016).
  • Achieve the European Qualifying standard (for their age group) for the European U20 or U23 Championships (in the year of application).
 
 
BASKETBALL (M)

  • In a BBL squad.
BASKETBALL (W)

  • In a WBBL squad. 

 

 

 

 

 

CRICKET (M) 

  • County 1st XI contract.

 

 

CRICKET (W)
  • England Central contract.
  • England Age group International.
 
 
FOOTBALL (M) 

  • Tier 1 or 2 Academy player released at age 18.

  • English Premier League 1st team regular if via GCofE.

 

 

LACROSSE (M) 
  • England Senior International.
  • Home Nations Senior International. 
  • England Age Group International (starter).

  • England Senior International.

NETBALL
  • Member of Super League squad.
  • England Age Group International.
  • Overseas Age group International (Australia/ New Zealand/Jamaica/South Africa).
RUGBY LEAGUE (M) 
  • Player released from Super League Academy.
  • GB Students International.
 
 
 
RUGBY LEAGUE (W)

  • Premiership academy player released at 18.

SQUASH (M & W)

  • English junior ranking- Top 15.
  • Part of the England squash Aspire squads. 
  • Represented their Country Junior U 19/senior level.
  • Represents their county in the senior premier division or county champion.

 

 

TENNIS (M & W) 

  • Top 50 British Junior Ranking in their last eligible year.
  • Must have made the main draw in a minimum of 3 British Tour events.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

TRIATHLON (M & W) 

  • All Leeds Beckett athletes who were selected onto the Leeds Beckett development squad. 
  • Junior orU23 International athletes
  • Member of Home Nations talent squad, in receipt of TASS funding or competing at an equivalent level.
  • Remaining places filled by athletes who score highly in the 400m/HC/3k time trials and show the potential, commitment and attitude to perform at a World Class level.
As a guide you would certainly require a minimum 3600 points to be considered for selection to Development 1.

Criteria for allocation

We have a limited number of Scholarships to award in 2017/18 and therefore in addition to requiring you to meet the above criteria we will give priority to students who can demonstrate that they will make a significant contribution in their respective sport. Meeting the criteria does not equate to entitlement to a scholarship.

You will be notified by the University if you have been successful in your application.

Cash bursaries will be paid in two tranches, October and February.

Tuition fee waivers will be administered directly between Sport & Active Lifestyles & the respective faculty fees team.

Scholarships are awarded for the tenure of one academic year. Scholars will be appraised (on sports basis and academic grounds) and they are eligible to apply the following year.

All scholarships will be allocated by 1 November 2017. Any student who has not been awarded a scholarship by this date and wishes to appeal against the decision must do so by 1 December 2017.
