About the club

Leeds Beckett Basketball Club competes in BUCS leagues at different levels of ability. The club offers a rich community that caters for students who wish to compete at the highest levels as well as for students who are looking to develop their game.

The men’s programme offers three clubs and the women’s offers two – with different levels to suit different levels of ability.

Our programme offers young domestic talent an opportunity to develop in a well-supported environment.

Matthew Newby - Head Coach

Leeds Beckett Basketball Head Coach Matt Newby

Matt Newby has been at the helm since the program’s inception and continues to drive several of the core interests of the Leeds Basketball Fraternity.

Head coach of both Leeds Beckett directing the Leeds Force foundation and its community interests, the Allerton Force Basketball Academy and with the Leeds Force BBL Franchise.

Over the last decade Matt has been dedicated to building a performance and development pathway for the sport in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

He is currently a Basketball England Level 3 Advanced Coach as well as being a qualified coach educator with the ability to deliver Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching courses.

Matt also has a long standing relationship with US basketball group Five-Star - having worked for over a decade on the prestigious camps through the summers and also co-directing the UK camps.

Matt has continued to drive the performance aspect of the BBL Franchise forward and is the Director and Head Coach of the professional team competing in the British Basketball League.

The performance tiers train between 6-10 hours a week on court and have access to strength and conditioning sessions in addition to high level sports science in services the opportunity to compete and train rivals other domestic options.

The men’s 2nd and 3rd tiers and women’s program consistently train in season 4 - 6 hours a week as well as access to recreational basketball which includes 5 on 5 and the popular 3 x 3 format.

We also have a fantastic range of facilities for basketball including:

  • Sports Arena - official basketball court
  • Blue Hall - basketball nets and floor markings
  • Green Hall – basketball nets and floor markings
  • Gym 2 – basketball nets and floor markings
