The Leeds Beckett University American football programme is comprehensive, with opportunities available for student athletes to coach the younger teams and work within local schools. Many students have developed their coaching skills through this along with attending courses delivered on campus and in the local region.
The team has developed strong links with coaches in the USA and Europe and there are opportunities for athletes to use these to further their American football playing experiences.
We understand that to breed success players must be treated as individuals and their programmes will incorporate; coaching, strength & conditioning sessions, analysis, and physiotherapy. The programme’s motto is: ‘The Relentless Pursuit of Excellence’ – we expect every student-athlete to join us fully in this endeavour.
About the club
The Carnegie Chargers are the only women’s american football team at Leeds Beckett University.
Our club plays at a really high standard, over the last two years we have finished 2nd in our annual competition - the Sapphire Series.
Have you ever wanted to try a sport and thought you weren’t fit enough? Or perhaps you thought you were too big or too small? With American Football, that will never be the case - we operate on a no trials basis - so if you like American Football you’re in!
The team have a wide variety of players with a mix of abilities - some of our players currently represent Great Britain whilst many of our other players have only just started playing - so no matter what your ability is you will fit right in!
The great thing about American Football is that no matter your size, shape, fitness level or ability there will be a position for you on the field.
We are an inclusive and fun team with a competitive edge - and we treat all of our members as part of a bigger family.
Our ethos is to work hard on the field, and play hard off-field with lively social activities suitable for everyone.
We will be hosting three taster sessions for you to get involved with our club this year!
As we do not offer trials, we will instead be holding three taster sessions or ‘Rookie Days’.
Rookie Day dates are as follows:
- 15th September 2018
- 22nd September 2018
- 29th September 2018
However, if Freshers has left you with too much to do and not enough time to attend one of our September Rookie Days, we also have a number of open training sessions where you can come along for free to try our great sport:
- 2nd October 2018 7:30-10pm
- 4th October 2018 7:30-10pm
- 9th October 2018 7:30-10pm
- 11th October 2018 7:30pm-10pm
All you will need to bring with you is a gum shield, water bottle and trainers and if you have football boots, they are ideal too.
Everything else, from pants to pads to helmets is provided by the club. However, if you would like to buy your own at any point in the year, our coaches and experienced players can give you expert knowledge on which equipment to buy.
