BUCS Round Up Week 6
Men’s Basketball dominate the old enemy, University of Leeds
Leeds Beckett’s Men’s Basketball First Team annihilated local rivals University of Leeds 83-54 in one of two Beckett’s Match of the Weeks.
Beckett were emphatic throughout their performance after a nip and tuck opening quarter, which Beckett lead 16-10.
The second quarter was anything but nip and tuck as Beckett put on a clinic to go 38-20 up at half time before turning on the style in the 3rd to go 59-34 ahead.
Beckett’s dominant 83-54 victory over University of Leeds has rocketed the Bears to the top of the BUCS Northern 1A League, with Beckett winning five of their opening six matches.
Our men’s next fixture will see the team compete in their opening BUCS Cup contest as they host BUCS Scottish 1A League’s Heriot-Watt University at the Sports Arena, Headingley Campus K.O 4PM.
Women’s Basketball lose out to Durham University
Beckett Women’s Basketball are still searching for their first win of the season after being edged out 66-45 by Durham University.
The girls put up a gutsy performance against Durham but were always chasing the encounter with Durham leading throughout the contest.
Despite some excellent three pointers by the girls and some great exchanges, Beckett came up just short against Durham.
The Bears will now look to next week’s away fixture against the University of Strathclyde, Scotland.
Best of luck to the team ahead of their long journey!
Beckett RFC triumphant over Inaugural BUCS Super Rugby Champions
Leeds Beckett RFC quickly got over last week’s heart-breaking defeat to Cardiff Metropolitan University with a tough 35-23 victory over Hartpury.
Beckett were made to fight hard for the win at the home of the current Champions, showing their dogged attitude they are quickly becoming known for this year.
Hartpury were good for value as well as they toppled the Beckett side in the opening stages, taking an early 13-3 lead in the opening half hour.
The Bears, however, have shown time and time again how tough they can be with a never say die attitude when the chips are down.
Beckett quickly hit back through a neat try from prolific Winger Daniel Leake assisted by a Connor Lloyd grubber and following conversion before Lloyd once more knocked over a penalty to level the scores 13-13 at half time.
The second half began in similar vein to the first, with Hartpury striking the first points on the board to go 20-13 ahead before Beckett regained control and composure through strike Centre Dan Kelly’s try and another Lloyd penalty gave Beckett the lead for the first time at 23-20.
Beckett furthered their lead through in-form Hooker Lotu Nuku to give the Bears breathing space which was followed by a penalty from Hartpury to bring the scores to 30-23 before Beckett sealed the win with a late try from a rampaging Stuart Nel 35-23.
