Students gain insight into practical application of sport and exercise nutrition in elite sports
The students heard from Ruth Wood Martin, who is the Lead Performance Nutritionist with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), and Leeds Beckett graduate and two-time 1500m Olympian, Laura Weightman, during a guest lecture.
Ruth shared her insights into the nutrition education and supplementation of players, as well as advising on catering schedules, hydration and recovery strategies. She has developed a managed evidence-based, policy driven health and sports supplement programme within the IRFU.
Laura spoke of her experience of the nutritional demands placed on athletes who are training and competing in the elite sport environment. She also talked about what qualities she looks for in a good practitioner.
Sport and Exercise Nutrition Course Director, Dr Lauren Duckworth, said: “The insights shared by Ruth and Laura help our students gain a real appreciation of the role of the sport and exercise nutritionist. This enriches the curriculum delivery and helps to prepare the students better for the world of work after study.”
