Leeds Beckett academic into the final round for award
Professor Jane South, from the School of Health, is one of the finalists for the Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards in the education category. She will be attending the awards ceremony at the Royal Armouries Museum later this week.
The Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards are designed to celebrate the achievements of incredible women from across Yorkshire. Jane was nominated by the Dean of her School, Sue Sherwin.
Speaking about her reasons for nominating Jane, Sue said: “I nominated Jane for the work she has done for the last 15 years with communities in Leeds facing poverty, poor health and hard-to-reach statutory services. She has supported and developed research staff in the School to engage in the healthy communities’ work stream, and she was instrumental in developing the CommUNIty project at Leeds Beckett University, which has developed relationships with third sector organisations such as St George’s Crypt and Hamara.
“She is a nationally recognised expert in her field and works towards building a strong evidence-base to inform Government policy and strategy in the field of communities and community health.
“Jane is committed to this work and has dedicated her research to helping disadvantaged people. She works well beyond her hours to meet all the demands of her work and is a grounded, unassuming woman who has made a significant difference to the lives of some of the most disadvantaged people in the Leeds region.”
Jane is Professor of Healthy Communities at Leeds Beckett University and Public Health England’s National Adviser on Communities. She has built an extensive portfolio of research and public engagement activity including two National Institute for Health Research studies. Her current projects include research on asset-based approaches and the ‘community wellbeing evidence programme’ for the What Works Wellbeing Centre.
Jane said: “It’s an honour to be one the finalists for the Yorkshire Women of Achievement Awards alongside incredible women from across Yorkshire. Valuing what volunteers and communities bring to health and wellbeing is at the heart of my research and it’s great to have recognition for this.”
