Beckett Choir Rehearsals

Love singing, making music, or just want to meet new people? Come along and join Beckett Choir - no auditions, and no need to be able to read music!

Beckett Choir is a community choir based in Leeds City Centre, bringing together singers from across the city and other local areas, led by Musical Director Kerry Prest. Many of our members either work or study at Leeds Beckett University, where the choir is fortunate to rehearse each week, while other members come to us from the community.

The choir performs a wide variety of music, from musical theatre and classical, to popular and folk. We currently host our main concert of the year in December, where for several years we have been joined by Phoenix Concert Band in order to perform a programme of festive music. We host smaller, more intimate events throughout the year, and can be requested to perform at local conferences and fundraising events. Previous years have seen us perform a varied programme including Vivaldi’s Gloria, hits from the West End and Broadway, Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb, English traditional music and even Beyoncé! In November 2016, we performed an intimate recital of pieces by Sting and The Beatles, hits from Hair and Rent, ‘Dry Your Tears, Afrika’ from Amistad, and the classic ‘Abide With Me.’ Early December saw us perform a preview of our Christmas repertoire and some traditional carols in the Bexley Wing of St. James’ Hospital in East Leeds, before our annual Christmas Concert with the Phoenix Concert Band in the beautiful surroundings of Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus.

We are a four-part choir, and welcome new members at the start of each academic term – particularly any gentlemen! We rehearse every Thursday evening during term-time, with rehearsals beginning 14 September 2017. Our termly fees cover the costs of music purchases and musical director fees, and are currently £40 for staff/community members, £25 for students (from any Leeds HE/FE institution) and £10 for juniors (13+).
