Let's get physical - Carnegie alumni reunite on campus
September marks the beginning of the academic year at Leeds Beckett, which means almost 30,000 students return to the city and their studies but this month also brings back great memories for many of our alumni who met at university and stayed in touch with friends and course mates ever since.
This was certainly true for the class of 1976 Education with Physical Education and the class of 1982 Physical Education courses, who revisited campus to share stories about their time here, explore their favourite haunts and learn how the university has developed since they were students.
Bob Mitchell (CertEd, Education with Physical Education, 1976) has since been organising biannual reunions for his year group. The group returned to campus on Saturday 8 September, marking 45 years since they started studying at what was then City of Leeds and Carnegie College.
With activities planned throughout the weekend, the group were joined by Peter Mackreth, Dean of Carnegie School of Sport for a lunch reception and tour of campus. They later enjoyed a dinner in the students’ union bar where they announced the results of their annual Carnegie Worldwide Photo Challenge which involves members of the group shared their photos from around the world featuring the Carnegie discobolus. Bob said: “It didn’t seem like over 40 years since we walked out of the Beckett Park halls of residence for the last time, leaving behind the Student Union Bar with its jukebox, but taking with us all those happy memories.
“It was wonderful for our large group of alumni to be back again on campus for our bi-annual reunion reminiscing over the good old days and reliving those memories once more in the SU bar. We all had a fantastic weekend but its success was down to the Leeds Beckett staff: the immensely supportive Dean of Carnegie School of Sport; the invaluable Alumni Department and the professional catering staff.”
Janet Reveley’s group of class of 1982 alumni returned on Saturday 22 September, marking almost 40 years to the day since they began their BEd Physical Education course. Janet explains: “The campus looked fantastic and it was great to see the original buildings with the updated gym facilities, particularly the exciting new plans for the future. I think it helped many of us re connect with university.”
